Is it better to live in San Antonio or Dallas?

We are a group of moms dedicated to finding the absolute BEST things to do in and around San Antonio, Texas

When it comes to deciding whether to live in San Antonio or Dallas, there are a lot of factors to consider. Both cities have their pros and cons, and it can be tough to decide which one is the best fit for you. In this post, we’ll take a look at some of the key differences between these two great Texas cities. By the end of it, you should have a better idea of which one is right for you.

San Antonio

While many people who live in the Dallas area like to make fun of San Antonio for having slow traffic and fewer job opportunities, they do have some redeeming qualities. The biggest positive that San Antonio has is its history. As one of the first Spanish settlements in Texas, the city is full of historical charm. It also boasts a number of renowned corporations located there including Valero Energy Corporation, H-E-B Grocery Store Company and USAA Insurance Group. With more than 80 miles of river front access waterfront on both sides of downtown, it is easy to find your slice of tranquility within this vibrant city. Priced slightly lower than Dallas with median home prices around $215,000 less, it’s an easy sell for people looking to settle down in a new area.

Dallas

Located closer to the DFW airport, Dallas is a major hub for business travelers, which ups its average income and quality of life considerably. There are more than 50 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the city including ExxonMobil, Southwest Airlines and Texas Instruments to name just a few. With that many highly skilled employees living in town, it stands to reason that there would be high demand for professional services such as accounting and law. On top of this, Dallas has some really amazing housing options available to its residents. There are plenty of luxury homes with amenities like swimming pools and movie theaters, not to mention beautiful golf courses if you prefer an active lifestyle outdoors year round.

San Antonio Pros:

Close to big cities like Austin and Houston

Affordability with median home prices around 200k less than Dallas’ average home price

History enriched environment filled with museums and landmarks dating back hundreds of years

 San Antonio Cons:

Slow traffic that causes many commuters to experience at least an hour in their car each day during commute hours (approx. 33% higher than national average)

Job opportunities are limited causing many to commute outside of the city for work

Dallas Pros:

Airport hub for international business travel

Many Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the city including ExxonMobil, Southwest Airlines and Texas Instruments

More than 50 professional service firms located within the metroplex including some of the nation’s largest law and accounting firms.

  Dallas Cons:

Home prices on average $20k more per year than San Antonio

Unemployment rate is 3% higher than national average (as of March 2013) at 6.4%.

We’ve provided you with some information to help you decide which city is best for you.
