Is San Antonio not safe at all?

We are a group of moms dedicated to finding the absolute BEST things to do in and around San Antonio, Texas

Safety

Muggings, pickpocketings, and purse snatchings are uncommon in San Antonio because the crime rate has decreased in recent years and there is a heavy police presence downtown (both the transit authority and the police department have bicycle patrols); as a result, muggings, pickpocketings, and purse snatchings are uncommon. Even, use common sense like you would everywhere else and just walk in well-lit, crowded areas. Also, walking south of Durango Avenue after dark is usually not a safe idea.

Crime
San Antonio is a safe place to visit. In comparison to the average American city, violent crime is rare. In reality, according to a firm that sorts through crime data for the United States, San Antonio is the eighth safest of the 32 largest cities in the country. Even so, you’ll want to stay away from the River Walk’s low-traffic areas at night and stick close to groups of other people to avoid tempting fate. You must also guard against opportunistic thieves, especially purse-snatchers in the downtown area. Keep your belongings tucked under your arm while walking around the downtown area at night, and don’t leave them unattended on a chair at a restaurant or bar.

The other most popular areas for tourists, the Monte Vista and King William neighbourhoods, are generally safe to walk around late at night, but the area south of King William, which closes early and has few pedestrians at night, is not.

Traffic

Everywhere you go, there will be traffic at some point, and San Antonio is no exception. However, there are days when traffic is worse than others. You will prevent an accident or being stuck at a standstill for hours if you avoid driving during these periods. You should expect to be stuck in traffic for hours if you visit San Antonio during Spring Break. If the Spurs are playing that night, the same applies. The stadium should be avoided at all costs. It’s also a good idea to schedule your trips before or after rush hour.

Uninsured Motorists

If you’re driving in the area, keep an eye out for uninsured drivers. The number of uninsured drivers on the road has risen to 90% in the last year, according to the San Antonio Police Department. It’s unclear if the city will or will enforce the rule, but uninsured motorists are common and seldom prosecuted.

The Riverwalk

The Riverwalk in San Antonio is a popular tourist destination, but you should exercise caution if you plan to visit. You should keep away from the edge since there are no railings except in front of the restaurants. Every year, more than 500 people drown in the river. It’s also a good idea to avoid this area after dark because it’s a popular spot for muggings. If you really must be down there after dark, stay in densely populated areas and don’t go alone.

Bad Neighborhoods

There are some areas in San Antonio with the highest crime rates, which you should avoid if at all possible. Westwood Village, the Southeast side, Palm Heights, Thompson Community, and Government Hill are the areas with the highest crime rates.
